Research and development of potato production in Pakistan

It is probably because of the combination of high potential and need to improve potato production techniques, that PSPDP was started in 1984, with the main objective to improve the income of resource-poor farmers in potato-based farming systems. After eleven years of existence of the project, both governments have decided to terminate the project and hand over the responsibilities for potato work to PARC and the provincial governments. During those eleven years, the area under potato has increased with approximately 50% and the national production has almost doubled, whereas certified seed production has increased from almost nothing to over 1700 tonnes, reducing the imports of seed from around 2500 tonnes to approximately 700 tonnes annually. The project has also contributed tremendously to the information that is presently available on all aspects of potato production, from the technical, statistical, organizational and resource side, through the execution of agronomical and methodological research, socio-economic surveys and the compilation of training manuals. A Database on Potato in Pakistan has been assembled by the project in which not only its own, but all publications on the subject that could be found in the country are represented, adding up to a total of around 1300 entries.
