Distribution of potato cyst nematode (PCN) in Kalam valley, Swat [Pakistan] during 1994

A survey of Kalam valley was undertaken by the Crop Diseases Research Institute, PARC, Islamabad with support and collaboration of Pak-Swiss Potato Development Project, PARC, Islamabad from 28 August to 1 September, 1994 to assess the situation of potato cyst nematode. The PCN was found to be prevalent in Bara Jabba, Gabra, whole of Utrore, Kanai and Palogha. Presence of PCN in Bara Jabba and Kanai was noted for the first time, indicating spread of nematode in both directions from Utrore, the original PCN-infested area. In Utrore and Gabral the population of PCN ranged from 7-325 cysts per 100 g of soil. Up to 1988 (the year CDRI last assessed the situation) PCN population was as high as 994 cysts per 100 g of soil in these areas. Observed decline in PCN population in Utrore area appears to be mainly due to introduction of non-host crop turnip in the rotation. No cysts were detected in samples collected from Gulabad, Matiltan and Ushu. The presence of PCN in Palogha suggests that the chances of its spread to nearby areas of Ushu and Matiltan exist.
