Initial growth, biomass accumulation, nutrient content and litterfall of four agroforestry hedgerow tree species

The mean biomass production (fresh weight and ovendry weight) of the tree species in the eight-month growing period was 1376.75 and 446.57 gm/0.5 m strip for Piliostigma malabaricum; 1279.00 and 291.98 gm/0.5 strip for Flemingia congesta; 4946.15 and 1953.70 gm/0.5 m strip for Gliricidia sepium and 861.10 and 363.70 gm/0.5 m strip for Leucaena diversifolia. At the age of 12 months, G. sepium had the greatest amount of biomass both fresh and ovendry (12,640 and 3,038.34 gm/0.5 m strip), followed by F. congesta (4,580 and 1,474.75 gm/0.5 m strip) and L. diversifolia (4,290 and 1,340.16 gm/0.5 m strip). The average nitrogen content was 1.25, 1.43, 1.87 and 1.40 percent for P. malabaricum, F. congesta, G. sepium and L. diversifolia, respectively. The presence of phosphorus was 0.10 percent for P. malabaricum, 0.20 percent for F. congesta; 0.17 percent for G. sepium; and 0.18 percent for L. diversifolia. The potassium content was 1.04 percent (P. malabaricum), 1.31 percent (F. congesta), 2.09 percent (G. sepium) and 1.41 percent (L. diversifolia). L. diversifolia produced the highest amount of litterfall (1,099.86 kg/ha), followed by G. sepium (1,026.68 kg/ha), F. congesta (782.66 kg/ha) and P. malabaricum (165.60 kg/ha). Except for potassium, the nutrient content of the litterfall was not statistically different among the species. However, statistical differences may be seen among the observation periods
