Utilization of Crotolaria juncea L. as a green manure in corn (Zea mays L.)

Results showed that Nitrogen content of Crotolaria juncea decreased with age at all seeding rates. Release of N from the organic biomass, which was indicated by the available soil N, was faster when C. juncea was incorporated at 30 than at 45 to 60 days after planting. Rapid increase in available soil N was noted within the first week, from the first to second week, and from the fourth to sixth week after incorporation of C. juncea at 30, 45, and 60 days after planting, respectively. Fresh and dry matter yields of Crotolaria and grain yield of corn were higher when Crotolaria was seeded at 40 and 60 kg/ha and when it was established as pre-corn and in situ. The same parameters were comparable with intercropped Crotolaria seeded at 60 kg/ha. Taller plants with significantly longer ears and more kernel rows per ear obtained the highest grain yields. Crotolaria green manure established as pre-corn, in situ or intercrop + 1/2 of the recommended rate of organic N obtained high yields which were comparable to Crotolaria alone established as pre-corn and intercrop. The cheapest among the approaches using the green manure were Crotolaria seeded at 40 and 60 kg/ha established as pre-corn and intercrop, respectively
