Effect of fertilization and liming on growth and yield of sweet potato in an acid soil

Liming and fertilization increased vine length, number of lateral branches and leaf size of sweet potato grown in an acid soil. Fertilizer application significantly increased the herbage yield, number and weight of marketable roots, total root yield, total dry matter yield and harvest index. On the other hand, liming significantly affected the total root yield, weight of marketable roots and herbage yield but not the harvest index and other yield parameters. C1-693-9, an acid tolerant variety, produced significantly higher root, herbage and total dry matter yield than VSP-2, an acid susceptible variety. Fertilization, liming and variety did not affect the starch content of the roots, however, liming and fertilization applied singly or in combination caused a significant increase in sugar content of the roots of both varieties
