Acidity of the rectum content in worker bees

The pH value of the rectum of 1100 worker bees was measured. The bees were sampled from the edge of the nest during the productive season and wintering. The pH value was measured using Merc lacmoid papers graded from 0.5 to 13. The acidity of the rectum of bees was found to be very substantial in either of the opposite seasons. Under conditions of the active season that make purging flights possible worker bees with a pH value below 5.5 are the prevalent class whereas toward the end of wintering (January, February) the bees with a distinctly higher pH value ranging from 5.6 to 6.5 are in majority
