The influence of some annual and perennial leguminous plants upon the yielding of subsequent crops on irrigated sandy soils

Sandy soils in southern Oltenia possess a scarce natural fertility, caused mainly by a reduced content in humus, low capacity of moisture retention and nutritional elements. Annual and perennial leguminous crops have contributed to an increased yielding capacity in sandy soils, by enriching them with organic stuffs and nitrogen fixed in symbiotic way. The subsequent crops gave higher production, namely 42-49 percent in wheat following soy-beans and peas, 10-16 percent in barley cultivated after Vigna sinensis, peas and peanuts, and 56-68 percent in maize cultivated after seed alfalfa and forage alfalfa. When cultivating on sandy soils annual and perennial plants in rotation, an economy of nitrogen fertilizers was obtained, which resulted in a reduced pollution of soil and groundwater.
