Gene sources used in the Romanian apricot breeding program

Although apricots are fruit of high value and demanded by market, the apricot culture is not too extended due to its low adaptability to new ecological conditions and poor resistance to its specific diseases. In most countries where this species have been grown in the past 30-40 years, expanded breeding programs were initiated aiming to obtain a great deal of varieties with various ripening seasons (a long consumption period), fine appearance fruit (size, colour skin), low vigour tree with fruiting spurs and good resistance to diseases. There are gene resources that can provide traits like: resistance to some diseases induced by fungi (Japanese genotypes of Pr. amsu, Pr. cerasifera x Pr. armeniaca, Pr. nume), flower buds with a longer dormant period, resistant to cold 6 varieties originating from Crimeea: Siurpriz, Vinoslivii, Lucistii, Kosmonaut, genotypes of Pr. armeniaca and prunus x dasycarpa; increased sugar (over 30 percent) and vitamins content (Keech-psahr, Hurmai, Suphani, Erevani, Sephid, Tabriz Nahicevan), earlines (NJA and Baneasa genotypes), lateness (Avgustovski, Septembriiska ovs.).
