Influence of water stress on some sunflower genotypes, cultivated on two soil types

Six sunflower cultivars were tested for tolerance to Al stress and water imposed separately and in combination with one another. Plants were grown for 4 weeks in plastic boxes containing 1 kg albic-luvisol from Albota-Arges. During the final 2 weeks the plants were subjected to water stress (moisture was 40 percent in c.c. of soil). After 28 days from springing the plants were harvested and data were collected comparative fresh weight, dry weight leaf area, foliar content, chlorophyll (a + b) and content of mineral elements. Our findings indicate that sunflower cultivars possess a wide tolerance to drought but are relatively similar in their sensitivity to Al stress. Considering 6 sunflower cultivars together, water stress reduced dry weight/plant with 42 percent, Al stress with 60 percent, while combined two stress conditions reduced dry weight/pl. with 75 percent. The high content of Al3+ affected more the root system, determining decreasing weight and roots volume.
