Prolonged freezing is shown to induce similar changes in the anion exclusion volume, exchangeable Ca** (2+) and organic matter fraction bound to Ca** (2+) content. A prolonged period with negative temperatures is the reason of fluctuations in exchangeable cations content in the chernozem, bentonite and kaolinite clays. Double electrical layer theory and the hypothesis of interlayer water behaviour can be applied to describe the formation of anion exclusion volume in both frozen and non-frozen soil samples
