Changes in maize pollen carotinoids induced by intense discontinuous white light and the problem of mutagenesis

Prehybridization short-term illumination of maize pollen of the Mangelsdorf tester (MT) by intense discontinuous white light (IDWL) with the energy of 3x109 to 3x1010 joule/m2 results in enhanced biosynthesis, photooxidation, transformations and photosensitization of carotinoids, and formation of peroxide and hydroxide free radicals (FR). Photosensitized carotinoids activate gene expression, while FRs exert mutagenic effect. Hybridization of the IDWL-illuminated pollen caused appearance of ca. 5% TM with dominating atypical reccessive characters never observed earlier. Such hybridization introduces additional genotype alterations without affecting significantly many practically useful properties. Being the ecologically purest and the most natural factor for plants, photomutagenesis is a highly efficient, soft, and easily accessible tool in genetic selection
