Mycobacteria in feedstuffs and feedstuff ingredients in Slovenia
1993
Ocepek, M. (Veterinary Faculty, Ljubljana (Slovenia))
In the period from March 1990 to March 1992 bacteriological examinations on mycobacteria with 191 samples of feedstuffs and 104 samples of feedstuff ingredients, taken from feed mill and fodder silos in pig and poultry farms, were performed. Mycobacteria were isolated from 14 samples of feedstuffs (7.33 %) and from 9 samples of feedstuff ingredients (8.65 %). Potentially pathogenic mycobacteria of the M. avium/M. intracellulare complex from a sample of bone-meat meal and a sample of pig feedstuff BEK-2 were isolated. From the results it has become evident that from time to time saprophytic and potentially pathogenic mycobacteria are present in feedstuffs, where from they may cause infections of domestic animals. The determination of isolated mycobacteria is absolutely necessary for establishing the epizootiological significance of the isolates
