The effect of bole rot on woodpeckers (Picidae) nesting
1994
Jamnicky, J.
Analysis of 289 nesting cavities of woodpeckers showed that only black woodpeckers (Dryocopus martius) are able to excavate nesting cavity in the sound wood of coniferous and deciduous trees. Other woodpeckers can excavate only into dry trees with rotten wood or live trees with heart rot and only sound girth ring of sapwood with thickness of 3-6 cm, and only exclusively to softwood deciduous trees (poplars, willows). It is recommended during felling to leave trees with cavities or those suitable for nesting in stands (aspen, cherry) to make nesting of useful birds possible and thus to contribute to the natural resistance of forest stands
