Overview of the farming systems in the highland agricultural region in the Northern Philippines

Productivity of the most cultivated areas in this region has drastically changed over the years brought about by severe soil erosion, soil fertility depletion, continued cropping, indiscriminate use of inorganic fertilizers and inappropriate farming systems to name a few. In the light of these problems, the farming system approach which considers the total resources of the farm and the entire range of the farming activity-from the production process to the marketing of the produce is a welcome development for the highland areas as an introduction to an appropriate acceptable soil and water conservation practices in the highland. Farming system as a centerpiece for highland development program should not only be geared towards generating a production base activities but also ecologically stable and socially acceptable. In this regard, it is very useful to have a broad systemview of the upland farming systems. The variability of the bio-physical and socio-cultural milieu of the highland agricultural environment throughout the region would necessarily require for a site-specific situational analysis to determine the important determinants of a particular highland farm and community for efficient and effective soil conservation program. The distinct farming systems presently adopted in the highland regions in the Philippines are (a) shifting cultivation or "Kaingin" system, (b) annual crop-based farming, (c) plantation crop-based farming, (d) agroforestry, (e) rice-based farming, and (f) animal-crop based farming systems. To sustain the benefits that could be derived in farming systems, the peoples involvement and active participation is essential
