High cost of new tractors discouraged many farmers from investing and used tractors were imported to serve their needs. From year to year, the number of imported used tractors increased without information to support appropriateness. This study was undertaken with the purpose of analysis and assessment of the use of imported used tractors compared to new ones. The operating cost and tractor availability were the main assigned parameters for the study. The field survey on 72 tractor owners in 9 provinces, sampled by the quota random technique, was carried out to collect the information on tractor use. The total operating cost of used tractors were 2.00 and 1.63 baht per horsepower-hour, respectively, and the difference was significant. For tractor availability, the difference was highly significant. Moreover, new tractors yielded 421.3 annual use hours higher than the used tractors and it was found that the more the tractor had annual use hours, the less the operating was.
