Jumbo tiger prawn (P. monodon) ovary at immature and early developing stages were studied with scanning electron microscopy. The immature-stage ovary was observed as small thin and elongate structure extending from cardiac region of the stomach to the telson. It is translucent, flaccid and consists of densely-packed pale-yellowish oocytes. The scanning electron microscopic study revealed coarse surface of oocytes (diameter=112 micrometer) due to numerous round mass of tissues seen inside through the lining membrane. Ovary of the early developing stage exhibited lateral expansion and changing colour of oocytes from pale yellow to olive-green. Oocytes (diameter=166 micrometer) surface appear rough due to shallow dimples and protruberances and covered by thin lining membrane. No round mass of tissue were observed. This study indicated morphological alterations of oocyte structure through developmental stages; 1) increase in size, 2) reduction in thickness of surface membrane lining, 3) increase in smoothness of surface.
