In the upper paddy fields of rainfed farmers in the South where rainfall distribution is quite good and draining of excessive water is possible, if the farmers can grow field crops such as peanut or mungbean as the first crop in late of March or early of April, they will be able to harvest the first crop in late of June or early of July. In that situation, turn around time before transplanting of rice crop is about 70-75 days which is enough for growing other vegetable crops as the second crop. The results of the study on three crops in rice based cropping systems at Phatthalung in crop year 1988/1989 and 1989/1990 showed that sweet corn and sweet potato were the potential crops which could be grown as the second crops. The average marginal returns for mungbean-sweet corn-rice cropping systems in 1989 were 5,669 and 7,459 baht/rai, respectively. For peanut-sweet potato rice, the average marginal return was 5,476 baht/rai while peanut-rice and sole crop of rice gave 2,530 and 1,296 baht/rai, respectively. Moreover, sweet corn and sweet potato gave the by products of stem and leaf of about 2,016 and 3,601 Kg/rai, respectively.
