Two poplar clones have been investigated: Populus nigra L., cl. 53/86 and Populus deltoides Bartr., cl. PE 19/66. Great variability of the number and size of stomata, as well as transpiration intensity in the investigated clones have been observed. The clone PE 19/66 has a greater number of stomata per square mm of leaf surface. The length and width of these stomata are smaller compared to the stomata of the clone 53/86. The intensity of transpiration per hour per square cm of leaf surface measured in July, August and September was higher for the clone 53/86, whereas the intensity of transpiration per cutting was higher for the clone PE 19/66 because of the larger leaf surface. Based on the results, it can be assumed that the number and size of stomata can be used as a criterion in the selection of poplar genotypes.
