Spod-X GH, recently registered in the Netherlands as a viral insecticide for control of beet armyworm Spodoptera exigua in cutflowers and potted plants in greenhouses

In November 1993 SPOD-X GH was the first insect virus to be registrated for insect control in the Netherlands. Spodoptera exigua nuclear polyhedrosis virus is highly specific for beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua. This insect can damage a broad range of potted plants and cutflowers, under which important crops in Dutch greenhouses such as Chrysanthemums, Roses, Gerbera daisies and Kalanchoe. Beet armyworm can also cause damage in vegetables, such as sweet pepper. Untill now, this pest is only a problem in a limited area in The Westland, a greenhouse rich area on the coast in the Netherlands. In 1991 and 1993 several efficacy and rate trials have been carried out in The Netherlands to provide the registration dossier with sufficient efficacy data. All these trials have been carried out in ornamentals. In 1991 trials have been carried out in Chrysanthemum and Kalanchoe. In 1993 the efficacy was determined in Roses, Gerbera and again Chrysanthemums. In the trials three different virus formulations (two flowables and a wettable powder) have been tested alternately and in some trials next to each other. All the trials were carried out in professional greenhouses. From the results of the trials can be concluded that the virus formulations control Spodoptera exigua at least as good as the regular insecticides Lannate (active ingredient (a.i.) methomyl), Nomolt (A.I. teflubenzuron) and Dimilin (A.I. diflubenzuron)
