Pratylenchus goodeyi (Nematode: Pratylenchidae): a plant parasitic nematode of the montane highlands of Africa

Plant-parasitic nematodes of the genus Pratylenchus feed on the roots of many crop plants, including bananas and plantains (Musa spp.), resulting in poor plant growth and yield loss. Root samples of bananas and plantains were collected from smallholdings at various altitudes in three transects conducted in south-west Cameroon. Laboratory examination showed the nematode species Pratylenchus goodeyi Sher and Alen to be restricted to samples obtained from altitudes over 600 m above sea level. This confirmed observations of a previous survey. The altitudinal limits of P. goodeyi in the Cameroon and its occurrence within tropical Africa reflect an "afro-montane" distribution. The presence of P. goodeyi in the Canary Islands and the Mediterranean region probably results from human introduction. The implications of these findings are discussed.
