Efficacy of control of the black vine weevil (Otiorhynchus sulcatus) with strains of Heterorhabditis sp., Steinernema sp. and the fungus Metarhizium anisopliae in nursery stock

Three strains of the insect-parasitic nematode Heterorhabditis sp. (North-West European group), applied in the autumn, and the insect-pathogenic fungus Metarhizium anisopliae, applied in spring, gave good control of the larvae of the black vine weevil (Otiorhynchus sulcatus) in containers outdoors. One strain of Heterorhabditis bacteriophora and two strains of Steinernema sp. gave some control, but inferior to the Heterorhabditis sp. In a climate room experiment two of the three strains of Heterorhabditis sp. (NWE) tested reduced the number of larvae by 80 to 100 per cent after six hours of 12 degrees Celsius soil temperature followed by 9 degrees Celsius until the end of the experiment. These two strains gave no control at continuous 9 degrees Celsius but achieved total control at continuous 12 degrees Celsius.
