Faunistic development of windthrow areas with and without timber harvest

After the winterstorm "Vivian" of 1990 investigations were started on the faunistic succession on windthrow areas. This paper presents first results of studies conducted from 1991 to 1993 on insects, spiders, millepedes, snails, amphibia, reptiles, small mammals, and ungulate species. Numbers of bark beetles, longhorn beetles, buprestid beetles, and wood wasps relevant to forestry increased significantly after the storm, predominantly on the uncleared areas. Maximum numbers of species and individuals were reached two years after the storm. Reptiles and small mammals in particular also increased in number after the storm. Biodiversity on windthrow areas was clearly higher than within the intact forest. Only snails and shrews were more abundant in the forest
