Silage effluent production depends on the dry matter content

The factors affecting effluent production were studied using data from 111 silages of green fodder with dry matter contents between 13 and 40 %, which had been ensiled in experimental silos of 9 and 13 cubic m. The evaluation showed that the DM content of the crop at ensiling is the chief factor in determining effluent production and almost no effluent will occur at DM contents over 30 %. Besides the DM content, the fibre content also affects effluent production. Silages with same DM contents, but higher fibre contents produced less effluent. A high fibre content means that the fodder is older and/or grass-rich and that the density is lower. In a further experiment the influence of the silo volume and a new silage technique (big bales) on effluent production was studied with grass of 19 % dry matter at ensiling. During an 18 week storing period 172 l effluent per tonne of fodder were produced in a 60 cubic m tower silo, 146 l/t in a 9 cubic m silo, and 16 l/t in round bales. Using big square bales, no effluent production was observed
