Some problems on sugarcane breeding for upland areas in China

Upland areas are the main base for sugarcane production in China. The direction and aim of sugarcane breeding for the Upland Area must be decided on the distinguishing ecological features and sugarcane growing characteristics in the areas. Key techniques for improving sugarcane breeding efficiency in the Upland Areas include: a. collecting and introducing sugarcane germplasm in home and abroad; b. more species and genus hybridization and parent stock creation, fully using China's profuse wild sugarcane germplasms and new-introduced elite foreign germplasms, broadening sugarcane genetic background, improving sugarcane vigour and stress-tolerance; c. disease-tolerance breeding; d. reforming the present breeding program.
