The effect of nitrogen fertilization on the yield, crude protein and amino acid content in Bromus inermis and Festuca arundinacea

The effect of increasing N-doses were studied on pure stands of Bromus inermis and Festuca arundinacea between 1989 and 1991. The experiments were conducted on forest soil under conditions of poor nitrogen and potassium and moderate phosphorus status. The results can be summed up as follows: Maximal yields were obtained by application of 500 kg N/ha. The treatments yielded 200-300 increase in grass production in comparison with the control. On the average of three years the two grasses gave nearly equal yields. N-fertilization increase dry matter yield by 207-313. Dry matter yields of the two grasses were also nearly equal. Favourable results were obtained on application of 185-190 kg N/ha (Bromus inermis) and 220-225 kg N/ha (Festuca arundinacea), larger applications of nitrogen were not economical anymore. In the chemical analyses crude protein content was found to be influenced by the N-fertilizer differently. Crude protein content of Bromus inermis was 2,7 higher on the average than that of Festuca arundinacea. The rising N dressings were found to increase amino-acid content till the level of 400 kg N/ha but in response to 500 kg N/ha amino-acid content decreased. Amino-acid content of Bromus inermis was higher than that of Festuca arundinacea
