Acetylene reduction activity in forest floor of broad-leaved secondary forest and the effect of moisture content and temperature on it

Non-symbiotic nitrogen fixation in forest floor and mineral soil of broad-leaved secondary forest was measured by using acetylene reduction technique. We have found that significant acetylene reduction activity occurs in L-layer. The highest activity, which occurred in L-layer, accounted for 94.5% of total activity in forest floor of investigated stand. Acetylene reduction activity, moisture content, and temperature of L-layer were measured every 2-12 days from July to October 1989. Variation of activity in field was related to variations in moisture content and temperature. Functions relating acetylene reduction activity to temperature and moisture content were derived from laboratory incubation of leaf litter samples under control condition
