Modification of PhilRice flour mill for multi-crop application

A PhilRice flour mill to generate fine and dry rice flour for traditional rice food/cake and bakery products was designed to increase the value of rice. Improvements were made on the design of the flour mill to minimize heat buildup at the milling chamber during continuous operation, and in order to widen its applicability in processing other plant materials. The new prototype features a screen assembly enveloping the rotor and enclosed in a spiral-shaped casing. This was made to reduce flour residence time inside the milling chamber and allow more air to freely circulate inside the chamber to reduce heat buildup. The prototype performed best at 4400 RPM rotor speed. At this speed, the machine's milling capacity for rice, cassava, and corn was 80.22, 132.25, and 38.43 kg/h, respectively. Compared with the old prototype in milling rice, the new one required less power and kept the flour temperature within acceptable limits. Economic analysis also indicates the profitability of the use of the flour mill when the price difference between milled rice and rice flour is above P1.30. For cassava and corn, this difference in price should be greater than P0.79 and P2.78, respectively
