Efficacy of two indigenous pesticide formulations for the control of some major rice pest

The efficacy of two indigenous aqueous formulations, namely J and A and J pesticides were evaluated for the control of golden kuhol (Pomacea sp.) and rice black mug (Scotinophara coarctata). The toxicity of the two pesticides on golden kuhol and rice black bug was tested in laboratory. They were found to be highly toxic, inducing 65-100 percent mortality 5 hours after introduction of the test-pest, at the concentration range of 1000-2000 ppm. They were also observed to cause disintegration of the reddish-pink eggs of the snail. Plot field test showed that J and A and J pesticides when sprayed at a dilution rate of 450 ml and 80 ml per 16 liter water, respectively, were effective against rice black bug (80 percent mortality) and golden kuhol (60 percent mortality). At farm level, J and A pesticide was likewise found to be effective in the control of golden kuhol and rice black bug as assessed by a farmer-cooperator on his 2.5 hectare lowland ricefield. It was also noticed that the pesticide was non-toxic to tadpoles and freshwater fish
