Management of sweet potato weevil (Cylas formicarius Fabr) on rice-sweet potato cropping pattern in La Union [Philippines]

The management tactics using sweet potato weevil (SPW) sex pheromone trap, Metarrhizium anisopliae (Metch.), and Cyfluthrin insecticide (Baythroid 50EC) used singly or in combination were comparably effective in lowering SPW infestation on sweet potato. The pest population was reduced from 73.17 percent to 20.64 percent. At harvest, weevil rating on storage roots was 26.90 percent to as low as 4.59 percent and the damaged storage roots ranged from 33.69 percent to 8.61 percent. In the untreated, weevil rating and damaged storage roots was high, 57.4 percent and 42.3 percent, respectively. The storage roots harvested on treated plants were sound to slightly damaged while the untreated were severely infested. Considering the added cost and hazards when using pesticides, Metarrhizium and SPW sex pheromone traps are highly recommended for rice-sweet potato cropping patterns to manage sweet potato weevil. However, in cases when both are not available, the cyfluthrin insecticide (Baythroid 50EC) may be used. Depending on the degree of field infestation on the main vines, the first insecticide spray application may be done within 45-60 DAP to prevent infestation of the main vines and the last spray within 80-90 DAP to protect storage roots
