Histology and histochemistry of the liver of goats (Capra hircus) treated with aspirin

Twelve goats were estrous-synchronized and treated with various dosages of aspirin (0g, 10g, 20g, and 30g) for 60 days to determine the effects of this drug on the morphology and histochemistry of the liver. The findings of the present study indicated that prolonged daily administration of aspirin affected the liver histologically. Such effects were manifested by loss of syncytial arrangement and enlargement of hepatocytes as well as vacuolations and decreased eosinophilia in the cytoplasm of the hepatocytes. Histochemically, the effect of aspirin was more glycogen depletion rather than glycogen deposition. Glycogen depletion occurred progressively, beginning at the centrilobular area, in 10 g aspirin-treated goats, spreading to the periportal area and finally involving the entire hepatic lobule in 30 g aspirin-treated goats. The dosages of aspirin (10-30g) administered and the duration of treatment (60 days) were insufficient to produce severe histopathological lesions in the liver of the goat
