Mango production: effect of bagging, monitoring and intervention

A model mango farm was established and participated by a mango producer-grower/contractor in San Roque, Bauan, Batangas [Philippines]. Recommended mango practices and management were adopted which included pruning, fertilization, flower induction, integrated pest management and bagging. Reduction in yield of mango was attributed to "Ulop", the term used by local producers of mango in the area. The phenomenon was later interpreted by experts as anthracnose-causing condensation of water vapor from low-lying clouds. Flowers and fruits during these period were attacked causing significant flower and fruit drop. Fungicide spraying was the intervening practice to control onset of the disease. Quality fruits and sustained yield and income was attributed to proper cultural practices and management and bagging. Bagging not only protected fruits from wind bruises but also from mango hoppers and fruit fly infestation during different stages of fruit development. Bagging also showed reduction in the use and frequency of insecticide/fungicide sprays
