Swetpotato germplasm evaluation under shade using maize as intercrop

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate sweetpotato for shade tolerance using corn as intercrop. In 1992, high yielding sweetpotato clones included 440317 (CN1489-89), 440055 (Perla), 440082 (IITA-TIS 83/176) and 440041 (Papota). In 1993, the best 3 clones (440317 = CN 1489-89, 440094 = NC 1582, and 440024 = Yan shu 1) had yield comparable or better than local cultivars. Compared to full sunlight grown plants, those grown under shade had reduced root yield, number size, and dry matter content. Root growth was greatly affected when shade occurs during initiation phase which is approximately 30 to 60 days after planting (DAP). This was indicated by a 24 to 36 percent decreases in yield. When shade was reduced or was no longer limiting, as indicated by the senescing corn, root yield was reduced only but 12-36 percent at 120 DAP
