Genetic analysis of different parameters of cotton plant in different cross combinations of Gossypium hirsutum L.

Gene action was studied for yield and its components in a 5 x 5 diallel of Gossypium hirsutum L. All characters viz. plant height, number of bolls per plant, boll weight, seed cotton yield per plant and ginning outturn (GOT) percentage showed additive type of gene action with partial dominance. The presence of some non- allelic interaction was also indicated for all characters. Better crosses appeared for plant height, seed cotton yield, bolls per plant, boll weight and GOT were B557 x Express, NIAB-B-97 x B557, Delcot x Tamcot, Tamcot x B557 and Tamcot x B557, respectively. NIAB-B- 97 proved the best combiner for bolls per plant, seed cotton yield per plant and GOT percentage.
