Antagonism to Colletotrichum falcatum Went, the red rot disease causing fungal pathogen of sugarcane was investigated. Out of 17 fungal isolates obtained from different soil sources. Trichoderma harzianum, Arachniotus sp., Chaetomium sp., Penicillium sp. Isolates 9 and Isolate 35 (unidentified) significantly inhibited the radial growth of pathogen. Culture filtrates of the antagonists, T. harzianum, Acremonium sp., Isolate 35, and Isolate 9 were very effective in suppressing the spore germination. It is supposed that some inhibitory substances were released into the medium which checked growth of C. falcatum.
