Thermal characteristics of the smectite minerals

On the basis of our results and literature data, a comprehensive presentation of behaviour for smectite minerals at the differential thermal analysis is carried out. Attention is focused on the differencies between normal and abnormal (with a double dehydroxylation reaction) variety of montmorillonite. The established relationship between thermal (temperature of dehydroxylation reaction) and chemical (octahedral Fe3+ content) data was interpreted as an evidence for the implication of Fe3+ in the differencies between the two species of montmorillonite. The high temperature crystalline phases of the smectite minerals are also presented.
