The ultrastructure of root nodules in symbiotic mutants of Pisum sativum

The transmission electron microscopy and morphometric analysis were employed to compare the patterns of nodule ultrastructure in the initial pea line (Ramonsky 77 variety) and its two mutants, with effective and non-effective nodules, resp. These mutants were induced by treatment of the Ramonsky 77 variety pea seeds with a chemical mutagen (nitrosoalkilurea). Nodules of the initial pea line, growth in the presence of nitrate, displayed an accelerated degradation of symbiosomes. In the ineffective k287 nodules, growth both with and without nitrates in the medium, no peribacteroid membranes were seen. A high effectiveness of the nitrate-resistant mutant k301 was due, in part, to a prolonged functional activity of bacteroid tissues, and to preservation of peribacteroid membranes
