TEM-investigation and X-ray microanalysis of Cephalomonas granulata (Chlorophyceae, Phacotaceae)

The rare phacotacean species Cephalomonas granulata was investigated by use of transmission-electron microscopy and X-ray microanalysis. It has a more or less typical chlamydomonacean-protoplast with a cup-shaped chloroplast. The pyrenoid is penetrated by thylakoid tubules. The cell is surrounded by a lorica which is subdivided in 2 main layers: an inner mucilaginous and an filamentous outer one (with sublayers). In contrast to the other genera of the Phacotaceae the nucleus lies parietal. The lorica does not accumulate minerals in high concentrations. The main elements are S and P followed by K, Cl, and Ca.
