This paper shows how certain environmental factors influence the population density of the great spotted woodpecker (Dendrocopos major) and the middle spotted woodpecker (D. medius) in oak forests during the breeding period, and how the mutual proportion of their abundances changes in relation to these environmental factors. This is done on the basis of a model of changes in the population density of these Woodpecker species in relation to changing percentage share of the sessile oak (Quercus petraea) and the turkey oak (Q. cerris) in a forest stand and with regard to different variants of the crown cover of upper, middle and lower tree layers.
