Isolates of Fusarium oxysporum (FO) were tested for the production of metabolites, namely fusaric acid (FA), toxic to Bacillus subtilis (BS). The FA standard and some of the FO isolates produced transparent zones around BS, their width ranging between 6-23 mm. No zones were formed around Fusarium culmorum. The zones formed by the FO isolates were the same as those formed around a sheet of paper immersed in FA. The zones formed on malt agar were more visible than those formed on malt medium. The differences in size of the zones were compared to the quantity of FA production by the FO isolates.
