The 2nd International Symposium "Biology and Taxonomy of Green Algae" took place at the House of Scientists, the Slovak Academy of Sciences, in Stara Lesna, Vysoke Tatry Mountains, Slovakia, 12-19 Sept. 1993. The symposium was attended by 81 participants from 23 countries of Europe, Asia, America, and Australia. 27 lectures were given and 36 poster presentations exhibited and discussed. 4 video and 2 slide shows were held. The scientific programme dealt with chlorophytic taxonomy and biodiversity in general, and in the scope of 3 specialized workshops with biology and taxonomy of desmids, ecology and physiology, and genetics and molecular biology of green algae. 3 all-day excursions and a 2-day post-symposial excursion to the Polish part of Vysoke Tatry Mountains and Pieniny Mountais were organized.
