Increasing the efficiency of potassium in chemical fertilizer through addition of organic compost on sandy loam soils of the Eastern region [Thailand]

Greenhouse experiment on addition of 0, 2.5 and 5 % (volume) of organic compost to 16 liter of soil without and with 0.7783 gram of K per pot of Ban Bung, Satuk granitic varient and Hup Kapong soil series and planted to corn was conducted to measure the portion of potassium that due to interaction between organic compost and chemical fertilizer and was expressed in term of potassium efficiency that is relative to total added as chemical fertilizer. The results were: 1. For Ban Bung soil, a coarse texture, low cation exchange capacity, very low organic matter content, low "available" potassium, and no potassium mineral in sand fraction, addition of organic compost to soil increased the potassium efficiency of chemical fertilizer (from 74 to 123 %) 2. For Satuk granitic varient, a coarse texture, moderate cation exchange capacity, low organic matter content, moderate "available" potassium and with high quantity of potassium mineral in sand fraction, addition of organic compost to soil did not increase the potassium efficiency of chemical fertilizer. 3. For Hup Kapong soil, a coarse texture, moderate cation exchange capacity, high in "available" potassium (may be due to residual potassium fertilizer) addition of organic compost to soil did not increase the potassium efficiency of chemical fertilizer.
