Granulation process during start-up of UASB digester
1991
Somsak Srivaloskhun
Experiment was conducted by a semi-pilot UASB biogas plant its reactor volume of 300 litre. Start up period had been performed 287 days since 23 June 1988 to 10 April 1989. Granular sludge was evidently found on the date of 113 at the loading of 1.36 kg COD/cubic m/d. First feeding was 75.7 % VSS of sludge. Major microorganisms content of sludge formations were rod, coccus and filamentous bacteria as well as yeast. The late sludge had higher setting velocity and high viscosity with less than 0.0308 m/s. The growth bacteria formed granular sludge. Granular sludge characteristic is elliptical, black colour, most of them would be 0.2-0.4 mm diameter. The selection of sludge by uplift ferment gas in the reactor was significant to form granular sludge. The organic loading rate influenced to the organic removal efficiency and also the granular sludge formation.
