Nine strains of Azotobacter chroococcum were selected for the research. The trial comprised the assessing of mass and nitrogen content in the above ground plant part and root. The effectiveness of the strains depended on the relationship between the strain and the variety, on the one hand, and on the characteristics studied on the other. The strains studied affected the increase of nitrogen content. Compared with the control, the highest increases of nitrogen content and the highest increases of mass found in variety Novosadski jabucar and NS-3-13/1-8 were 273 and 840 and 9 and 64, respectively. The strains of Azotobacter chroococcum were most effective with the variety NS-3-13/1-8. No single strain of Azotobacter chroococcum increased mass and nitrogen content in both tomato varieties.
