IAWQ model no 1. Always sufficient for description of nitrogen removal?

Two half-scale pilot-plants (64,5 cubic metre each) have been run for 2.5 years to raise a database for the upgrading of the (domestic) wastewater treatment plant Hannover-Guemmerwald to complete nitrification and denitrification. During simulations for several periods using the IAWQ model No 1 it was found that effluent nitrate concentrations could not be represented correctly by the model. From nitrogen mass balances a loss of nitrogen (presumably in gaseous form) from the aerobic zone could be shown. Further evidence for a nitrogen loss could be found by aerobic batch tests, monitoring nitrogen in its different forms in the solid and fluid phase. It is suggested that bacteria capable of performing the processes aerobic deammonification or aerobic denitrification are responsible for the nitrogen loss.
