Influence of temperature on sodium and potassium intracellular contents of Clostridium neopropionicum, a strictly anaerobic bacterium isolated from methanogenic plants

Clostridium neopropionicum is a strictly anaerobic acetogenic bacterium isolated from methanogenic ecosystems. It fermented ethanol to acetate and propionate. Dense resting cell suspensions demonstrated a steady-state sodium level, and a progressive efflux of potassium. Growth at a temperature different from the optimal value resulted in a cellular sodium accumulation. These results suggest possible modifications of the cell physiology, and a possible implication of sodium ions in cell energetics.
