Genetic analysis of self-incompatibility in sugar beet

Two F2 families, segregating for the degree of self-incompatibility, have been analysed with molecular markers (RFLPs). The analysis reveals a number of loci (3 in one population, 5 in the other) with significant effects on the proportion of seed produced by selfing, rather than out-crossing, of the plant. Of these, four exhibit apparently similar types of gene action, one of which is common to both populations. Homozygosity for the recessive allele at any one of these loci is sufficient to render the plant significantly less self-fertile.
