The influence of soil type, tillage and cultural measures on the effect of root knot and cyst nematodes on sugar beet root growth

Sedentary cyst forming and root-knot nematodes cause increased lateral root development and stunting of the sugar-beet plants. The damage and reproduction of these nematodes is not significantly more on sandy soils than on clay soils. Only indirectly the content of young organic matter could reduce multiplication of cyst and root-knot nematodes by stimulating antagonists. Reproduction of both nematode groups is far more influenced by soil temperatures during spring and summer. The impact of precipitation is confined to the decrease of beet-cyst nematodes during the growing of a non-host crop. Sufficient rainfall or irrigation will decrease the damaging levels of these nematodes considerably. Severe development of beardy roots and stunting could increase the amount of soil tare under favourable harvesting conditions.
