Prevalence of the genes encoding the necrotizing cytotoxic factors (CNF1 and CNF2) among Escherichia coli isolates from ill and healthy bovines

DNA probes and PCR were used for the detection of CNF1 and CNF2 positive Escherichia coli in a collection of 1,134 strains isolated in Belgium between 1991 and 1995. These strains were isolated from calves oradult cattle, halthy or with various pathologies. The presence of CNF1 E. coli is associated with septicemias (24 per cent), pneumonias (21 per cent) and diarrhoea (19 per cent) in calves. CNF2 E. coli are more numerous in the feces of adult bovines (28 per cent) than in the feces of cows suffering diarrhoea (15 per cent). They are however associated with pneumonias in calves (18 per cent) and metritis in cows (40 per cent). It might be hypothesised that CNF+ E.coli isolated from diseased animals carry other specific virulence factors that are not present on E. coli isolated from healthy individuals.
