Garanoir is a new red grapevine variety obtained from a cross between Gamay and Reichensteiner at the Swiss Federal Research Station of Changins in 1970. Garanoir ripens early (earlier than Pinot noir) and should not be cultivated in too warm locations. Its yield potential is high. Resistance to Botrytis cinerea is quite good. The must sugar content is medium, while the acidity value is low. The wine is deeply coloured, fruity, and smoothy. In some cases the acid content may be too low. Garanoir is also a valuable component of blended "cuvees"
