Lactobacillus casei was daily administered to experimental calves at 2 g per os. 1 g of inoculum contained 1x10**8 of L. casei germs. In experimental (group P) and control (group K) animals, the avergae daily weight gains were 0.762 kg and 0.619 kg, respectively. In experimental calves, significantly higher total protein and urea serum levels were observed as early as two weeks after L. casei administration. On week 1 of the experiment, serum cholesterol levels in experimental calves were the lowest, those in control animals were the highest for the whole period of observation. At the end of the experiment, following the four-week L. casei administration, significantly higher Lactobacillus spp., Escherichia coli and the total number of aerobic micro-organisms in faeces were seen in experimental calves.
